Qanat is an invention and unique way of water supply engineering because of mountanous climate of Iran, which is a symbol of civilization in ancient Iran.  

  There are thousands of Qanats all over Iran now, which many of them are still active. Among these plenty of Qanats, there are 11 special Qanats that each one has its special features in the world and the most special one is the deepest and was built in Hakhamaneshiyan dynasty (about 2500 years ago) is the Qasabe Qanat in Gonabad which is nominated to be registered internationally.

The Qasabe Qanat is located in south west of the city of Gonabad, 1km road to Kakhk, 271 km south of Mashhad in E058, 41.056, N34, 19.947 and 1100 m higher than the sea level. This Qanat is one of the most wonderful man-made structures and a symbol of the harmony of human with the nature. This Qanat is 33 km long, which consists of two original branches known as Qasabe and Doolaab, which it consists of 427 deep wells. Digging such a huge tunnel with the master well of 340 m deep and over 73 million m3 excavation in 300 m deep, without any mistake along the path and the smooth slope of Qanat in ancient time is a masterpiece in the world. This wonderful Qanat which was built at least 2250 years ago, has been one of the Qanats with a lot of water in Iran that the Debi of water is about 150 lit/s in the whole year. The water taken from this Qanat was transferred to about 34 km farther than the outlet of it in order to water the large area of the farms.

It is advised to visit this masterpiece of Hakhamaneshiyan dynasty and other attractions of Gonabad on your trip to Mashhad and Khorasan that it takes at least one day long.
