Shadegan lagoon has been announced as the shelter of the wild life and has been registered in the convention of Raamsar on the list of the international lagoons. It is located in the south west of Iran, the north of the Persian Gulf in Khoozestan province. It goes to Ahwaz-Abadan road from west and to Khormoosa from east. See in Google map

 

  

The area is 328926 Hectares at the sea level. The average rain is 218 mm and the temperature is 26 centigrade degree, which makes it too dry and warm. The north area has sweet water and the south area which touches the Gulf has salty water. It is a few meters deep and the Jarrahi-River supplies the water. The best way to reach the lagoon is the road of Abadan to Ahwaz. After exiting Abadan, for about 50 km, there is a side road on the right which reaches to Shadegan. There is an oil pipeline on the left side of the road. On the way to shadegan there is a river goes across the road on which there is the village of Sorakhieh and surrounding Villages that are known as the Veniz of Iran E048,32.388 , N30, 41.023 , h=40 m.

The locals commute by boat on the lagoon caused this area named as the Veniz of Iran. Most of the time local boats stop there to be used as transportation system for the tourists. The locals are Iranian Khoozi and they talk Arabic. They are very friendly, welcoming and hospitable. Yellow bread, kinds of dates and its products plus dairy products are from buffalo milk and they are famous of this area.

Various plants in this evergreen area, lots of local and migrant birds live in this lagoon and also some mammals and snakes are living there and in surrounding area.
