Falak-ol-Aflaak castle is located in the west of Iran, in Lorestan province, in the center of the city named Khorram-Abad, on top of an archeological hill.

The monument is limited to Khorram-Abad River from the East and the South-west, To Davazdah-Borgi St. from the West and to Falak-ol-Aflaak St. from the North.

 

Falak-ol-Aflaak castle or Shahpour-Khaast fort is the memorial of the old city of “Shahpour-Khaast” that was built by the first Shahpour of Sasanian dynasty in the 3rd century A.D. On one hand, building the castle on top of rocks and having the whole view of the Khorram-Abad historical valley, as well the Golestan spring in the North of the hill are its major element, on the other hand, the monument is close to pre-historical caves in Khorram-Abad valley and other historical places such as “Sang Nebeshteh” (The stone cutting), “Menareh Ajori” (The brick tower), “Asiyabe Gabri” (The Zoroastrian watermill), “Pole Shekasteh” (Broken Bridge) and “Gerdaabe Sngi” (The stone whirlpool) are all linked to each other.

The current architecture is affected by the annexes in different eras that the most of them have been during Safavieh and Qajar dynasties. According to the imagery documents, up to 100 years ago, there was a wall including 12 towers all around the monument, but just one tower is remained at the North-West of the castle.

The area is about 5300 square meters, including 8 towers, 2yards and 300 shelters. The highest wall is 23 m higher than the surface of the hill and the materials are stone, brick, mud-brick, plaster and lime. The entrance is towards the North and placed at the South-western tower, passing through the entrance, it goes to the first yard. The water well is located at the North-east of the first yard. The well is 42 m deep that reaches to the Golestan spring by cutting rocks. The water supplement of the castle has been from the well from the past and still is the same.

The wonderful architecture and beauties of this archeological and historical castle in Lorestan has made it to be known as a masterpiece of architecture and engineering of the world. The castle consists of first yard, old bath, castle well and the second yard. The monument has been the treasury of the Badr family in the 4th Hegira century. The castle has been the territory of Atabakan, from Safavieh to Qajarieh dynasties and political prison and the army during Pahlavi dynasty. Since the National registration, the castle has been the museum of anthropology and gunmetal Lorestam.

The monument has been renovated recently to open museums of anthropology and archeology, and the laboratory of renovation, cultural and handicraft shops and traditional tea-house for giving services to the tourists.
