The historic complex of the great grand bazaar in Tabriz is located in Tabriz, the center of the East-Azerbaijan province in the North-West of Iran and it is registered as the first bazaar of the world, on the world heritage list in the UNESCO in 2010.

 

In the traditional architecture of the cities in Iran, bazaar complex includes: the connecting corridors, Chahar-Souq, caravansary, Timcheh, lines etc. which form the main structure of the city. The historic bazaar of Tabriz includes various parts such as trading, religious, health care and residential sections inside the grand bazaar for the merchants from other cities and the residential homes for the traders around the grand bazaar. Connection among the elements is so important in such complexes.

This complex is a complete sample of the Iranian cultural and traditional trading system.

This bazaar, with the area of about 1 Km2 is the greatest roofed bazaar in the world. It includes a complex of roofed and brick-made joined lines, having over 160 various elements such as about 5500 shops, stores and booths, 40 kind of jobs, 35 Sara units, 25 Timcheh, 27 mosques, 20 lines and bazaars, 21 corridors, 9 religious schools, 2 Chahar-Souq, 3 tombs, 2 markets and 8 malls, 1 Zoorkhaneh (Traditional sport club), 2 libraries, 5 bathes, and 1 refrigerator which is still the main trading center of Tabriz.

Tabriz is located along the Silk-Road between the corridor of Asian, European and African caravans and had a good prosperity in the past. The grand bazaar has been famous and brisk in the 13th century A.D. when the city was the capital in Safavieh dynasty. In the 16th century A.D. the capital city was changed but it still remained as the main trading center to the end of 18th century A.D. and the expansion of the Osmania Empire.

This market was renovated by its local governor about 3 centuries ago after the earthquake of Tabriz. A lot of tourists have given information about the grand bazaar, the ones who have visited it during 4th Hegira century up to Qajarieh dynasty such as: Marko polo, Ebne-Batouteh, Hamd-Alaah Mostofi, Sharden etc.

Tabriz grand bazaar includes the main part of the ancient Tabriz and an effective part of Tabriz today, including the main bazaar center, Haram Khaneh bazaar line, Kaboud mosque and Sorkhaab market. The main gates of the city and the entrance for goods have been located in the area of grand bazaar before. There are still the remains of the four famous gates at the entrance of the grand bazaar like: Sorkhaab gate, Baqmisheh gate, Khiaban gate and Nobar gate.

It is recommended to visit the grand bazaar of Tabriz on your trip to the North-West of Iran and the city of Tabriz.
