Naqshe-Jahan Square (Imam Sq.) is a great rectangular shaped square in Isfahan, surrounded by the monuments from Safavieh dynasty. The complex is internationally registered as the world heritage in 1979 in UNESCO.

 

This square is about 80000 square meters, the length is 507 m and the width is 158 m. Naqshe-Jahan square has been built in a smaller scale in the 15th century A.D. in Teymourian dynasty and there was a wonderful garden named Naqshe-Jahan, before selecting Isfahan as the capital city.

During Safavieh dynasty, by the order of the first Abbas king at the beginning of the 17th century A.D. the square has been expanded up to the present shape by the famous architects such as Ali-Akbar Isfahani to complete the new wonderful capital city of Safavieh.

The square was used for various ceremonies, military parade and playing Chogan in the past and nowadays it is used as a public tourist attraction sites, praying, national and religious events.

The square is surrounded by historic monuments which are connected to each other with arched and roofed corridors.

The Naqshe-Jahan monuments are Aliqaapou, Abbasi the great mosque (the Shah mosque), Sheykh Lotf-Allah mosque, the wonderful Qeysarieh gateway and Teymouri palace (belonged to the 15th century). In addition, there are 200 two story shops and workshops all around the square that are almost used for the handicraft of Isfahan.

The monuments are the important documents presenting the Iranian culture and social life in Safavieh era which are the summery of architecture, designing and handicrafts of Iranian artists. The complex is the symbol of beauty and the wonder of the Iranian’s civilization and culture in Safavieh era.
