Shahr-i Sokhta is the name of the range of the mountains about 12 to 18 m higher than surrounding area which is about 151 hectares located in Sistan and Balouchestan province that is 56 km away from Zabol to Zahedan. 

 

 This 5200 year old city is the honorable certification of this area. The cemetery of Shahr-i Sokhta with the area of 25 hectares and 40000 tombs is one of the vastest ancient cemeteries, which can help us a lot to do research about the civilization and Hirmand’s and its suburb’s resident’s beliefs.

This city is called Shahre-i Sokhta (the burnt city) not because it has been burnt several times but also because the Hirmand River has changed its direction and the area has dried out continually.

Shahr-i Sukhta has been one of the really developed cities of its time and also the center of arts and industrial activities, such as jewel making, weaving, ceramic, metal melting, stonecutting, tile making, etc. which some of these artworks are at the Shahr-i Sukhta museum. The city hall has had a unique, organized and well-planned management. However, they had water supply and sewage systems on 3000 B.C. They also had an advanced medical science and they could do bone settings and even surgeries on skull. These people have been one of the first inventors of some hobbies such as chess and backgammon. Shahr-i Sokhta from 3200 B.C. to 2000 B.C. for a period of over one thousand years has been the capital of Hirmand area.

The first animation and the first artificial eye have been discovered in this city. A wooden ruler has been found that its accuracy is about half a millimeter! One of the most important objects which has been found in this site has been a muddy plate which a line in Ilami is seen on it. The discovered objects are made of stone, bone, metal, wood, leather, ceramic and mud. Imported goods such as bluing stone, turquoise, shell, marble stone, diorite, cupper, etc. exist too. The cultural and ancient objects inside the site have existed over four billions! Mud and stone sculptors, stomps, weaving, designed ceramic plate, wooden object, mat basket, leather pocket, treasury, jewels, rope, etc. are other objects have been found in the Shahr-i Sokhta.

It is recommended to visit other attractions of Zabol such as Khajeh Mountain and Hamoun Lake on your trip to the Shahr-i Sokhta too.
