Ramsar used to be called Sakhtsar before. It is located in the South coast of the Caspian Sea, the west of Mazandaran province, North of Iran and the Alborz mountain ranges, 290 Km away in the North-West of Tehran. Ramsar County is between the Caspian Sea (the largest lake in the world) from the North, the Alborz mountain ranges and Hirkani Jungles from the South, Tonekabon from the East and Roudsar and Gilan province from the west.

Ramsar coordinates at 37° North which is mild and humid climate. The county includes 120 Square Kilometers of ever-green mountains and forests. The temperature is at least 5° centigrade in winter and the highest level 30° centigrade in summer and the annual rain is about 1650 millimeters.

All North coastal cities of Iran have their own tourist attractions, but Ramsar has a big variety of attractions including the touristic infrastructures. Ramsar is a unique touristic destination for its water sports and entertainments, forests, mountains, archeological, historical, traditional and local sites. Museums, Palaces, cable-cabin, hot-springs, sea food, cuisines, local flea markets, shopping centers, green villages, green mountains, springs and waterfalls, aerial sports and fun activities, handicrafts and souvenirs of the North, etc. 

The Izgaam-Dasht archeological graveyard, 14 Km away in the East of Ramsar from 3000 years ago is an evidence of the ancient civilization in this area. The goods obtained from this archeological site can be visited in the museum of Ramsar. Markouh castle near Katalem village in the E50°, 44.028’ & N36°, 51.843’ and about 200 meters above the sea level on the top of a hill, that includes about 360 stairs among mountain forests goes back to over 1000 years ago and Niyayesh castle on the North of it, these are the signs of the strategic location of this area.

The old and new hotels of Ramsar were built in Pahlavi’s time, the first and the second. These hotels are fronted by the sea and forests from both sides which have been along a Blvd. goes to the sea. Tamashagah-Khazar palace-museum is about 6000 square meters; it has various attractions such as Marmar Palace, Pink Palace, Mother Palace, the anthropology museum, ivory museum, traditional bath, Bamboo garden, the pond, garden and the green space.

Several hot springs have formed unique spa attractions for the tourists. There are two different kinds of hot-springs: The sulfur water that is good for the relaxation, nerves, skin diseases and johnts problems. The Safaroud-park has a carbonated drinkable mineral water. Ecotourism and local life styles can be seen in the surrounding villages such as Javaher-Deh, Jannat-Roudbaar, Sarvelaat, Katalem, Sadat-Mahalleh, Arbekaleh, Heris, Safa-Roud, Dalkhani. Dohezaar forests, springs and and waterfalls such as Mamashalam and Javaher-Deh are the other natural tourist attractions.

The cable-cabin and the touristic area of Ramsar is located 5 Km in the West of Ramsar. It includes accommodations, restaurants and shopping centers in both Northern and Southern part of cable-cabin and pier entertainments. The cable-cabin goes from the seaside to about 700 meters above the green mountains.

Javaher-Deh village is known as the lost heaven of Iran. It locates 27 Km away, in the South-West of Ramsar, on the mountain foot of Samamous Summit which is 2000 meters higher than the sea level and between the clouds. This area is about 10° to 12° centigrade cooler than Ramsar. There are several springs and waterfalls in this area. The 700-year-old Adineh Mosque is located in the village.

The local market of Ramsar has its special especially on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ramsar airport includes aerial sports and fun activities. Other attractions of Ramsar are Plaseed tomb, Aqa-Seyed Abol-Hasan tomb, Mijiran Dam, Rice fields and tea farms.

Handicrafts of Ramsar are the pottery, wooden products, Monabat, Gereh-Chini, traditional sewing, Silk clothes, traditional clothes, carpet, Gelim and straw mat. The cousins are the sea food, Sour-Kebab, Akbar-Joujeh (chicken with pomegranate sauce), Baqla-Qatoq, Mirza-Qasemi, etc. Tea, cookies, Caviar, fish, olive, olive oil, garlic, citrus, different kinds of pickles and jams, hazelnut and walnut are the local products and the souvenirs of Ramsar.

You can reach Ramsar through the road called Chalous or Rasht highway. Ramsar has an airport too. It is advised to visit the beautiful city of Ramsar and enjoy its cousins and local products.
